Look beyond the Rust and Crust of Life

Hello Creative Friends

I hope you are all keeping well and those of you in the UK
are looking forward to the upcoming Bank Holiday..??

I've been having a BIG craft sort out and came across more UFO's
I knew these elements would work very well together.

Here's what I got up to and those *How to Do's*

Take a cheap household sponge and glue it onto a greyboard heart.
Shape to size, punch in holes and add eyelets when dry.

Onto an MDF Chunkie I pushed texture paste through the Lines Stencil
Smeared on sand paste with my fingers and when dry painted
all over with Chestnut Brown Multi Surface Paints.

I then dabbed on paint from the colour choice you see, spritzing with water
allowing the paints to drip, fall and catch on the textured surface.

The sponge heart was first painted in red, spraying with water
makes it easier for the sponge to absorb the paint. When dry
I dabbed on spots of texture paste and allowed it to dry completely.

Using a bag full of greyboard cogs already prepped as a colour guide.

I used that same colour palette seen above to paint the whole heart
mixing the colours on the sponge to replicate the colour of rust.

Arranging the cogs onto the chunkie I threaded a lace through
the heart gluing it all in place using multi purpose adhesive.

Adding the finer detail to create the rust effect background,
pushing and pinching the texture paste allows it to crack

Picking away pieces of the texture paste also removes parts of the sponge
revealing those protected rich reds underneath as the paste acts as a resist.

Stamped words on Kraft card are distressed and concertinaed

Glued into place my Rust effect chunkie is complete and ready to hang.

Wishing you all a fabulous week ahead
what ever you have planned.

Take Care & Stay Safe

Creative Hugs & Wishes
Tracey xx

Wow, Tracey, this is just amazing- what a great idea with the sponge- it looks totally gorgeous, after your painting and cracking the surface , adding paints to make it look rusted, what it really does.
The chunky background, too is fantastic . Whom would have ever thought a sponge could end up looking like that !!
Wishing you a wonderful Bank Holiday, dear friend- Big hugs from Dorthe- xx

Ingenious what you did with the sponge!
I often save colored little sponges and looking at them and thinking about how to use them in a piece, but never used one yet..lol. How you made this is simply AWESOME!!!

Wow Tracey, it is hard to believe that that was once a sponge, it looks amazing, like a pitted piece of rusty something or other, it is brilliant. The whole piece is brilliant, you have a wonderfully inventive brain - could I borrow it for a day or so, I am clean out of ideas at the moment! This truly is a wonderful piece of art! Hugs, Anne xx

It's not the first time I have altered a sponge, I built part of a model railway for my eldest when he was little using many of them. Such a versatile and cheap material to use. So happy to see you like it Dorthe, Thank you very very much.
Have a wonderful week dear xx

Susi you are so sweet and it is so heart warming to know that the little things I share are appreciated. People like yourself are so kind with words, it makes taking those steps to share so much easier.
I hope you too use up those saved sponges and turn them into Art as it all helps save our environment with a little less going to landfill.
Thank you as always for your visits I hope you enjoy as much as I do when I come on over to visit you xx

That is an amazing piece of art and I love how you made that heart. Who would guess it is a cheap sponge? I love the rust effects. Hugs-Erika

Tracey@Hotchpotchcreations said...

Awww Thanks Anne, I must admit it reminds me of pumice up close with those exposed holes in the sponge. I have these sort of ideas all the time usually when i'm trying to switch off & watch a bit of TV, they interrupt and scratch away until i've written them down. Finding the time to execute them is the problem I have.. Those ideas will come Anne when you are least expecting them.
Thank you as always for your kind comments, it means a lot xx

Every year from April 1 to April 22, which is Earth Day (and also my bEARTHday), I showcase art I make using items one would normally send to the trash or recycle bin. I may ask to share this beautiful heart sometime during the month of April next year. It is phenomenal. Of course, I am also drawn to anything RUST, so the entire piece was incredible. I love how you chipped away at the cogs and heart to get to the base color. Your attention to detail is STELLAR. I love it all, dear.
